Does exactly what I needed... [Posted on 2008-09-10] I purchased the YX510 with some hesitancy due to some reviews of users that hadn't the greatest results. Turns out that if this product is installed `correctly' it works like a charm. In our basement we get little to no cell signal. The antenna is mounted in our attic and the ample 50 foot cable runs through the 2nd and main floors down through the walls into our basement where the unit is installed. Now were receive a steady 5 signal bars on our cell phones, and we opted for the dual band to accommodate any cell provider changes we might make in the future. Great product even though it is a bit pricey (I saved near $150 by buying this from amazon.com)... Very Happy with the YX510.
Works exactly as advertised! [Posted on 2008-09-17] I moved into a house almost a year ago that appeared to be in a "black hole" for cellular coverage, despite the coverage maps provided by cellular company indicating otherwise. No matter what I did, I couldn't get a signal inside the house, so all of my cellular calls were restricted to being placed outside in my front yard. Calls to my provider were unhelpful at best.
In response to this, I purchased the YX510. I had read nearly every review on this site beforehand and it sounded simple to set up, provided you could comply with the somewhat restrictive installation parameters.
I planned on mounting my antenna on the peak of my roof, but to be sure, I placed numerous cellular calls from on top of the roof to ensure I had a reliable signal and good line-of-sight to a cellular tower. Once confirmed, the antenna was mounted to the roof using the provided bracket. I then routed the cable through a nearby vent into the attic, and then across the attic to an area above my centrally-located kitchen. Using a cable TV switchplate (identical to what you would connect your cable TV coax to at the wall), I drilled a small hole in the ceiling, then connected the free end of the 50-foot cable to the switchplate. After screwing the switchplate into the ceiling, I added a short length of additional RG6 cable to reach the base unit. It's a clean install, and when I move out, I can easily take the antenna and base unit with me, and leave the cabling installed. Total vertical separation between the base unit and the exterior antenna is approximately 20 feet. Total installation time was about 4 hours, done by myself, including about 30 minutes wasted searching around the attic for the hole I drilled.
The unit works exactly as advertised. Throughout my 1800 sq.-ft. house I have between 3-5 bars. The closer I am to the base unit, the stronger the signal. I no longer have dropped calls, no matter where I am in the house. Even the EDGE network is working now.
I'd buy this again without question.
It works [Posted on 2008-09-19] I was weary of the effectiveness of the unit in my house after reading several reviews. I placed antenna in the top window (about 15 feet from the ground) of our sun room and the device has been working beautifully. It boosts my Sprint signal by about 3 bars. Now we don't have to deal with frequent drop calls in the mid of conversions.
Cell Phone Signal Booster Works [Posted on 2008-09-21] The Wi-Ex zBoost extender I purchased has made it possible to have cell phone conversations without going outdoors. Antenna placement was critical, but after my son and I erected an antenna tower for the antenna the system works well. Before the booster, I missed at least half of the words and couldn't follow a conversation. With the booster I only miss an occasional word and can have long conversations easily. I live in an area where outdoor signal strength is only 2 bars on a 5 bar phone.
Saved all my 4 WirelessVerizon lines. [Posted on 2008-09-23] I put the antenna on top of the roof where I get good reception and ran the cable to my living room where I had no reception. The device works great. Transmits powerful signal where I need it the most. It works better with AT&T than Verizon Wireless however it can still save your life & life of the battery!
This item "brings" the signal closer to your device, so do NOT buy this if you get zero signal at where you live.
I would strongly recommend this item.
