Terrific! [Posted on 2008-08-15] Just what my wife wanted. Excellent service and very quick turnaround/shipping from the merchant.
Decent PDA, Crappy phone [Posted on 2008-08-27] I've had a Palm PDA for about 10 years - I love a PDA.
This device stinks though.
I bought it so I don't have to carry both phone and PDA, but have since switched my SIM card to the free Motorola phone that came with my phone contract and have reverted to carrying two devices again.
When the phone is turned on, the PDA freezes for 3-8 seconds at random intervals, the battery drains in less than 24 hours and it makes nearby speakers hum and chirp at random intervals. When the phone is turned off, it works like a normal Palm PDA and the battery holds a charge for at least a week. I think it incredible that while it plays MP3s from the pTunes program, it won't play an MP3 ring tone. Palm must be incapable of or unwilling to hire decent cell phone engineers.
Calling Palm support is a waste of time too - you get someone with poor English skills and a script for you to follow. (Hard reset the device & reload). Deviate from the script and forget it - they're totally lost.
The PDA is standard Palm PDA, except they pulled the free expense program I used all the time and replaced it with one that costs extra and does less. You're better off with a Tungsten and separate cell phone than this piece of crap.
I WILL NOT buy another Palm device when I get around to replacing this one. I'd like to feel that I at least get my $400 worth of use from this PDA before I replace it with a smart phone from another manufacturer.
Treo 650 vs treo 680 [Posted on 2008-09-14] Ok here my 2 ct's...
1. I had a treo 650 for a couple of years. Pretty good device after I had mad a custom rom. The result was a much larger working memory for programs to run. Most programs were not so much a problem, but nice things like TomTom were testing the device's capabilities. Which resulted in crashes once in a while. Or you had to reset the device before starting the program to retain your much needed precious memory.
Ok why am i telling you this? With the treo 680 no more of that. Huge internal working memory makes this device much more stable. So for only this feature, this device is a nice upgrade.
2. Size on paper is not that much of a difference with the treo 650. But it feels so much smaller and lighter. It really is nicer overall. People likes the looks of it, while the treo 650 was referred to as a fridge...
3. Battery, lots of complaints here. But not really true. Be sure you have the latest update. I have 2.12 ROW. I use this thing heavily and it will get you through two days of hard work. My HTC S730 lasted only 1 day for example. It is not bad. Just bought an upgrade battery 1600mh form Seido, which probably keeps my precious alive for 3 days. Keep in mind that push email drains your battery quickly, just like any other phone (charge every day). Consider the auto sync feature.
4. Only gprs...so for internet not so good, same as the treo 650. Still great for email. Exchange works very well. Only thing I cannot do is invite others for an appontment, other options are the same as on windows smartphones.
5. Speed, musch faster than other smartphones i have used. The treo 650 feels faster though. The treo 680 sometimes have to clear its bigger memory (for programs) just like the treo 650. But since the memory is bigger it stalls longer. We are talking 2 seconds here. This does happen occaisssionally. Overall faster then the treo 650 because of the abcense of resets. So its stability vs instant response. Keep in mind comparing the treo 680 with any windows phone...the treo 680 is lightning fast.
6. Softwarewise the treo 680 is loaded. With docs to go, pocket tunes...
7. Build quality. No squeeks. Heard rumors on the net that the 680 can have micro cracks after 2 years of use.
8. SAR rating half of the treo 650 and much other smartphones out there Call quality and reception is much better than the 650 and HTC's I know.
At the current price this is an absolute buy. I am really happy with the device. For serious users and pro-consumers this is great. Because of the excellent keyboard and software it is your office everywhere. Good luck.
Early impressions [Posted on 2008-09-26] A little hard to get working. I had just bought a laptop with windows Vista. It took a download from DocumentsToGo and Palm. Could be bigger like the TungstenC and I miss the SD card slot.
I bought it to use as a PDA and needed the QWERTY keyboard to enter lots of numbers in Excel everyday. Too bad there aren't larger PDA's with keyboards. But it's good for gathering data daily and easy to keep dry in our wet windy weather.
Seller was a champ - had to ship two units. First one didn't arrive by Priority Mail.
